Questions about website hosting

"Why pay for website hosting when I can get it for free?"
Well there's got to be a catch, hasn't there? Free hosting services are no good for lots of reasons but here's just a few to prove the point.

Firstly, the key search engines refuse to waste time ranking pages on these free hosting sites for the very good reason they are of such poor quality and usually disappear within a short time anyhow.

Secondly these free hosting servers are naturally overburdened. They're really, really slow and very, very unreliable.

Thirdly, who wants some third party's advertising popping up all over their pages? Not very professional looking, is it? Don't waste time even thinking about free hosting if you're trying to advance your organization's prospects via the internet.

As always, you never get more than you pay for and if you look a gift horse in the mouth you'll find it has rotten teeth.

"Are all professional hosting services pretty much the same?"
Far from it! Look, we know you don't want us to write a book on the subject but basically you get what you pay for. This is going to govern the speed of downloading your pages onto the screen, the overall reliability of your website, percentage downtime and so on. Then there's the important question of HelpDesk facilities and how long it takes to get an accurate answer to anything. Price also has a bearing upon the facilities or tools available to be used in developing your website.

Importantly there is the matter of the human technical skills and management expertise behind the webserver facility to consider. Finally, is the hosting service financially strong and has it been around for a number of years? You don't want to wake up some day to find your hosting company has gone belly up and put your website off the air.

"My ISP offers website hosting. Could you place my site hosting with them?"
Certainly we can but in many instances we don't recommend it. In our experience Internet Service Providers are justifiably focussed mostly on providing their customers with reliable surfing and reliable e-mail services. Most of their hardware resources and manpower resources are naturally dedicated to that end as well. For these reasons and others we would usually prefer to use the webserver of a specialist organization who is in business to do nothing else but host websites in a reliable manner at a reasonable price.

Experienced website developers rarely place place client websites on he webservers of ISPs.
